Traffic and parking problems are escalating on Holmwood Rd, but residents hope to gain victory tonight in their battle to reclaim car parks outside their homes. As more businesses have moved in around the road’s intersection with Rossall St, finding a park in the area has become a growing problem for both customers and residents.

Holmwood Rd resident Roy Bickerstaffe said customers regularly parked across residents’ driveways because they couldn’t find a park. He had also found people parked up his driveway, leaving their car there while they went to get a coffee at the shops. He hopes to convince the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board tonight to put more

restrictions on car parking in the area. That would free up parks by discouraging commuters from parking there. The block of shops on the corner of Holmwood Rd and Rossall St have been rebuilt and extended since the earthquakes, and include a busy cafe and a bakery. A kind of croissant/ doughnut hybrid, based on a butter-rich croissant dough that’s been shaped like a ring doughnut, deepfried, tossed in sugar, filled with cream or custard then glazed. Apparently

invented by New York chef Dominique Ansel in 2013, the originals have been trademarked. But that hasn’t stopped copycat cronuts from having a short but sweet popularity worldwide. Astronomical calorie count, far too much saturated fat and a megadose of sugar: so bad they’re bound to be good.

Can I make rice milk at home?

Yes. It’s considerably cheaper than store-bought but won’t be fortified with extra vitamins. Put 1 cup of freshly-cooked rice (eg, short grain or brown rice) in a blender, add 4 cups hot water and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence (optional). Process for 5 minutes or until very smooth then let stand for 30 minutes before carefully pouring the liquid (but not the sediment) into a fresh container. Or, strain the mixture through cheesecloth. Store in the refrigerator and use within three days.

Firm feijoas should be stored at room temperature to ripen. Once soft, keep them in the refrigerator. Because the skin is tart it is not usually eaten although unpeeled feijoas are great in jams or pickles.

A SEED IN THE EYE….OUCH! Willow is a lovely, placid young female Golden Retriever who has a fantastic life exercising with her owner and riding with horses on farms and at the beach. One lucky canine. Suddenly in January of this year, Willow developed a weepy, sore right eye. This quickly progressed to a sticky eye that had a continuous copious mucky green-yellow discharge visible. There was no cough or sneeze heard. Her left eye remained completely normal. Despite intensive, appropriate treatment and investigation from Willow’s primary vet, the discharge persisted. The right eye was now inflamed and irritated. Willow was still lively but wasn’t quite herself and she would hold her right eye partially closed. Willow was referred to Dr Steve Heap in mid – March. At the clinical exam, the yellow discharge could be seen “welling up” from Willow’s lower right tear duct. As soon as the eye was cleaned more discharge would appear. Apart from this infection of the lacrimal (tear drainage) system and the eye being inflamed there were no other problems detected. Infection of the tear drainage system is termed Dacryocystitis. Steve felt that the most likely cause of this was a foreign body – likely a vegetative foreign body e.g. a seed or barley grass awn that had entered the tear duct considering the terrain she frequents daily.

One of the world’s most popular writer and illustrator for children will visit Fendalton Open-air School this month. Best known for his series Captain Underpants, Dav Pilkey (right) will visit the school on May 23 at noon to bring fun to reading and provide the opportunity for the pupils to meet him and ask questions. A large public event open to all primary schools will also be held at Shirley Boys’ High School on May 22 at 1.30pm. Captain Underpants was first published in 1997 and has sold more than 70 million copies worldwide, with more than four million sold in Australia and New Zealand. The series is being turned into a feature film to be released in 2017 and is in production with Dreamworks Animation. In late

These can be very difficult and frustrating problems to solve at times. Under a general anaesthetic, Steve carefully put a catheter into the nose and into the exit of the nose end of the lacrimal system. This catheter was lodged firmly in place. The lower tear duct was partially opened. Water was flushed vigorously and copiously through this catheter. After about 10 mls of flushing, there was a blockage for period of 1-2 seconds. On examination under an operating microscope, the end of a substantial seed was glimpsed. This was then grasped with forceps and removed!! A large “C’mon” was heard from the operating room as this was removed. The lower tear duct was then stitched carefully together. Ten days post operatively, the right eye was still watery but there had been no mucky, infective discharge for the first time in over 2 months. The best thing was Willow was a lot happier, more energetic and playful than she had been and fully opening the eye. A great result all round and a very satisfying part of my job was being able to resolve the problem for Willow and her owner quickly and atraumatically.

2012 The Adventures of Captain Underpants made the Scholastic Top 100 Greatest Books for Kids list. That same year it also became the most banned book in the United States, beating Fifty Shades of Grey. Captain Underpants began as a comic book that Pilkey started writing while he was in primary school to cope with bullies and his learning difficulties. Today he is a strong advocate against bullying, and for helping children who need to learn to read in different ways. His books have paved the way for ‘reluctant’ and ‘challenged’ readers for more than 16 years, and continue to inspire, educate and make our children laugh. The event at Fendalton Openair School will be held at noon and bookings are essential and can be made through The Children’s Bookshop on 366 5274.

FLYING VISIT: Fendalton Open-air School pupils will have the chance to meet Captain Underpants author Dav Pilkey this month.

Art idea for vacant land BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

An empty piece of land in Riccarton West will become the site of another community project. The land on Riccarton Rd, near Shand Cres Reserve is owned by Housing New Zealand and has been empty since the building was demolished after the earthquake. The community is currently brainstorming ideas for the site, which it has for one year, and would like to see a public art space go in. A similar deal was made in 2013 when Housing NZ offered a piece of land on Peverel St, free of charge to the community which became the home of the community garden. Community garden organiser Sheree Wharewhiti is involved with the new project and in the process of coming up with ideas for it. The community had already come together in meetings to discuss options for the site, and a lot of people had contributed ideas,

EXCITING: A Housing New Zealand-owned empty site on Riccarton Rd will be turned into a community-run transitional art space. she said. Some included putting sculptures there, a mini stage for puppet shows, or have it as somewhere to hold workshops. “Anything that’s uplifting and encouraging and inviting.” She said it was a collaborative effort and would be working with

the neighbourhood policing team and hoped to get the university students involved with the project. The community projects, including the community garden had a positive impact and a new project would be “amazing”, she said.

“We’ve got lots to do in this community. “It’s the people that keep me going.” She said it would take a couple of weeks before they had any set plans for the site and ideas were welcome. Housing NZ Canterbury earthquake recovery programme operations manager Andrew Booker said Housing NZ was pleased to offer the land temporarily. “It is up to the local community, not us, to decide what should feature on that land over the next year and we are excited to see what innovative ideas the locals come up with.” He said the similar arrangement for the Peverel St site had worked very well. “This garden recently won an award from the city council which is a fantastic result for those involved in that project.” Housing NZ was considering a range of redevelopment options for both sites.

Residents take up fight for parking •From page 1 City council traffic engineer Wayne Anisy has drawn up a report on the issue for the community board, and recommended that a 120min parking restriction should be put in place on the eastern end of the street. That would discourage commuters from parking there, but allow space for customers or visi-

tors to homes in the area to park. But Mr Bickerstaffe said the recommendations didn’t go far enough. He said residents wanted to see them extended further down the street, and white lines drawn around parks to discourage people from parking over driveways. He has lived in the area for 30 years, and said there needed to be

more long term planning around the issue, because traffic problems were growing steadily as more residents and businesses moved in. Residents and businesses have been consulted on the proposal, and the six submissions received were all in favour of it. But there were disputes over the restriction times, with most businesses wanting 60min park-

A detailed scope of what is needed to repair the Halswell Quarry Crusher Building has been completed and the procurement process is now under way with an expected completion in the second quarter of 2016. A design of the Singlemans Quarters has also been completed and scheduled for completion at that time. It will now go to resource and building consent. The design process for the Old Stone House has just begun and the repair work is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2016.

Two more public drop-in sessions to discuss the options for the Riccarton Rd bus priority project will be held at St Teresa’s Church Hall on Wednesday and May 11 from 4-7pm. Wednesday’s session will look at the section between Clarence and Matipo Sts, and the following session will look at the project as a whole. Burnside Bowling Club Incorporated has applied to the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board to build a small storage shed within its leased area at Burnside Park. The club would like to build the shed to house mowers and maintenance equipment. The community board will decide whether to approve the application at its meeting today.

Housing NZ’s $350 million The disaster and destruction wreaked from the Canterbury earthquakes has created a chance for Housing New Zealand to reconfigure and modernise its housing stock in greater Christchurch. It is often said that out of disaster, comes opportunity and it is this philosophy that is driving Housing NZ through the final year of its massive earthquake-recovery programme. This work has a price tag of about $350 million and sees up to 5000 earthquake-damaged houses repaired and updated and the construction of 700 modern, warm and dry homes. The earthquakes had a major impact on Housing NZ’s Canterbury stock with more than 95 per cent of its 6200 properties damaged. Many were uneconomic to repair, others were located in the “red zone’’ and later demolished and cleared from damaged land. Thousands of others needed repairs so they could continue to be safe for tenants. In early 2013, the Government charged Housing NZ with delivering a comprehensive programme of work that would see up to 5000 earthquakedamaged properties repaired and up to 700 new homes built. When completed by the end of 2015, this would restore its Christchurch housing stock to

NEW: These five twobedroom units in Elizabeth Rd, Riccarton were completed earlier this year. PHOTOS: TONY STEWART / PHOTOSHOTS LTD pre-earthquake levels. Housing NZ settled its earthquake insurance claim in April 2013 for $320 million. This money is being reinvested into the region to complete both arms of the recovery programme. An earthquake recovery team, headed by general manager Paul Commons, was formed to handle the huge job of co-ordinating the repairs needed urgently, ensuring tenants were looked after, recruiting contractors and others to help with the repairs and to

co-ordinate the programme of repairs and new builds. MWH and Arrow International were contracted to oversee and co-ordinate the delivery of the minor and major repairs respectively. Housing NZ has separated the repair programme into two specialised areas – the minor repair programme including repairs up to between $40,000 and $50,000. The major programme covers repairs over that figure. At its peak, up to 1000 workers will be involved in the pro-

gramme, making it a significant cog in the wheel of the Canterbury earthquake recovery. Mr Commons said repairing earthquake-damaged properties was a key part of the overall programme to improve the quality of its social housing stock in the region. More than 650 staff working across 16 suburbs are involved in this programme of work. The team also includes a group of tenancy liaison staff whose role is to support tenants who need to have repairs carried out at their properties.

GOOD JOB: John Key during a visit on a new Housing NZ development in Addington. in those houses. The construction yard at the prison site has about 50 houses either undergoing repairs. Seven are ready to be relocated and another seven will be ready by June. The joint Housing NZ and Department of Corrections refurbishment programme has already seen four completely renovated properties moved to an Aranui site where families now enjoy the warm, revitalised homes. Over time, 150 homes in need of repair will be taken to Rolleston Prison where prisoners will upgrade them. The work included recladding,

rewiring and replumbing the houses. In some cases, the layout of the house is changed so they can be better configured for future tenants. The programme has been dubbed the Second Chance scheme. It offers a second chance to the prisoners, some of whom have found building-related jobs after their release. Mr Commons said the agency was pleased to be able help provide training opportunities for prisoners, while getting to recycle houses. “At the end we get modern and fit-for-purpose housing for people in need,” he said. The Second Chance programme, alongside the repairs and new builds work were all part of the overall Canterbury earthquake recovery programme that will, by the end of this year, not only return Housing NZ’s stock back to pre-earthquake levels but ensure much of that stock is new, modern or has had comprehensive repairs and maintenance undertaken. Mr Commons said the earthquakes created a rare opportunity to not only modernise existing homes but to add more new properties into the region. Post 2015, more new social housing will be developed throughout Christchurch as Housing NZ further modernises its stock and continues being the social housing provider of choice.

O

MODERN: This Halswell home was built this year and is one of 700 new homes to built across Christchurch by the end of the year.

Suburbs throughout Christchurch – from the city’s western areas like Riccarton through to communities in the city’s east like Aranui and Shirley, which sustained some of the worst damage in the earthquakes – are getting new social housing. An example of a new development is at Addington’s Church Square. Three separate sections that each accommodated a threebedroom house were amalgamated into one title and 10 new twobedroom homes were built on the new enlarged site. Late last year, Prime Minister John Key visited this new development. He was very impressed with the quality of the housing and also spoke to tenant, Paul Meek, who said he was thrilled to have been offered a brand-new home. “I just love it,’’ he told Mr Key. Older properties are also getting plenty of attention in the earthquake recovery programme. An innovative partnership between Housing NZ and the Department of Corrections is already paying dividends. Over the next few years, earthquake-damaged houses will be transported to Rolleston Prison, where prisoners under supervision, upgrade the houses. At the same time, the prisoners have the chance to upskill their qualifications, raise their self-esteem, keep themselves busy while in prison and help breathe new life

S

Both targets – repairs of up to 5000 properties and the construction of up to 700 new homes – are to be completed by the end of 2015. As at March 31, there had been 3624 completed repairs and 159 new homes built across the city. More than 420 were under construction and 219 were being negotiated and evaluated for construction. The new builds programme is helping modernise Housing NZ’s stock across the city with new warm, dry homes under construction throughout Christchurch.

S

In many cases, tenants can continue living in their home while repairs are done but sometimes, it is easier for them if they are temporarily relocated to alternative accommodation while the repairs are carried out. Mr Commons said there were many moving parts to the programme but a well co-ordinated management style across different arms of Housing NZ, its contractors, building partners and tenants meant the programme had tracked well and was on schedule to achieve a challenging target set by the Government.

Residents satisified Monument relocation ceremony in Riccarton west BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

A plaque to remember the Russley Rd Baseline Monument relocation project will be formally unveiled in Avonhead Park next week. The New Zealand Institute of Surveyors Canterbury Branch had the plaque made to sit alongside the monument’s new location and members will gather on May 15 for the unveiling. It originally sat next to Russley Rd to commemorate the activities of Captain J Thomas, C.O Torlesse and T Cass who measured out the base line for the survey of the Canterbury settlement in September 1849. But the monument needed to move to make way for the Russley Rd four-lane expressway upgrade. Surveyors took about a year trying to find a suitable location along the baseline to move the monument to, and Avonhead Park was chosen. It was relocated in 2012, and the position of the monument and brass plaque have been surveyed and entered into the Geodetic Database. New Zealand Institute of Surveyors Canterbury Branch representative Todd Airey said the new plaque was not only to commemorate the work of past surveyors, but to remember its relocation. He said it was not an easy process, and heavy machinery was needed to move the monument twice, once to a secure site office, and the second move to Avonhead Park. “It’s for our members to think

BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD Early glimpses at the results of a safety survey conducted in Riccarton west have shown people enjoy living in the area. The survey is part of an American programme called SafeGrowth which complements the work done by the Riccarton Neighbourhood Policing Team. It was piloted in Phillipstown in October 2013 and introduced in Riccarton west in September last year. Sheree Wharewhiti, who is heavily involved in community projects, said in looking through some of the completed surveys, most feedback was positive. The survey closed in mid-April and there were 105 responses received. “It showed they do feel a bit safer in the community.” She said some good feedback included people saying the streets were cleaner and there was less graffiti in public spaces. A number of people commented on there being fewer broken bottles and glass on the roads, footpaths and parks, she said. “And that’s due to the liquor ban.” A permanent liquor ban was introduced across Riccarton and Ilam in 2011 after a trial temporary ban proved successful following the February 2011 earthquake.

Sheree Wharewhiti Ms Wharewhiti said the ban had allowed more people to come into the community. “You see a lot of activity now, especially with the elderly.” Two areas that people wanted to see improved in Harrington Park was lighting at night and trimming back some trees to make it safer, she said. “A negative is still a positive to us because it outlines it for us.” The data and feedback from the surveys are now being analysed and compiled by Canterbury University students and a full report will be prepared by the end of the month. The information will be used to make a neighbourhood safety plan, aimed to build neighbourhood ownership, and make it a better place to live, work, and play.

GRASSROOTS SPORT West zone’s netball triallists revealed The west zone netball trials were held on Wednesday, with eight of the west’s best primary school netballers being picked to go through to the city-wide trials at the end of the month. The eight triallists to make it through were Middleton Grange’s Olivia Amer, Denvre Stocks and Katie-Jo van den Bogaert. Villa Maria’s Isabella Grant, Caitlin Knudsen, Joanna Penrose and Lucy Stoud. Sophia Morton of St Patrick’s in Bryndwr, was the final triallist to make it through. The trials for the other eight zones are to be held over the coming weeks before all primary school triallists meet at Hagley Park for a Christchurch metro trial with the intermediate school trial on May 26 and the primary school one on May 28. From those trials 60 will be selected for the next stage before that is whittled down to the final 30 for a trial on June 2 where the final team will be selected. The team will then travel around the South Island taking on teams from Dunedin, Ashburton, Selwyn and Timaru in August.

The ultimate challenge Two Canterbury University students are juggling their studies with preparations for the Ultimate Frisbee World Championship in London, in July. Keith Algar, 19, and Chris Carr, 21, have both been picked to represent New Zealand in the men’s under-23 team. Algar is in his second year studying engineering and Carr is in his fourth year studying engineering and biology. Officially known as ultimate, the aim of the game is to catch the frisbee in the other team’s end zone. For the championship tournament the first team to reach 17 goals in 100min wins. Carr said the sport offers a great balance of competitiveness and social interaction. “It’s all self-refereed, which means that the players on the field are responsible for calling fouls. This means that players generally have more of a focus on playing fairly. “I started playing in my first year at university to meet new people. The game has the benefit of attracting quite cool people and you make pretty good friends,” Carr said. Ultimate has a small yet growing profile in New Zealand, but has limited funding available. Carr said the costs of getting to

BIG STAGE: Chris Carr during an ultimate match. He has been selected to represent the New Zealand under-23 side to play at the world championships in London. the world championship are difficult to meet. “The flights to London are the main cost, but as part of our preparation we also have a training camp every two weeks and they’re usually held in Auckland or Wellington, so the costs of those flights add up pretty quickly.” Carr works when he can, as well as balancing training every night and full-time study as he works toward two degrees. The whole family enjoys sport in their spare time; Chris’ brother also plays ultimate. His

father and vice-chancellor of the university, Dr Rod Carr, enjoys swimming and running, having completed the London, Paris, Athens, Boston, New York, Istanbul and Antarctica marathons in the last 11 years. Carr says that winning the ultimate championship would be the perfect underdog story, although unrealistic. “Getting into the top eight is one of our goals as we finished 10th in 2013. It’s all about building and growing the sport. It’s still tiny in New Zealand, but it’s growing rapidly,” he says.

You’re never too old to keep fit Ian and Irene Oxley have been running KEEP ACTIVE! in Spreydon for five and a half years. It is a fitness class which is popular with senior people. The classes have become so popular they have just started another one in Halswell. Reporter Bridget Rutherford chats to Ian about why the couple started the classes, his nursery work and expanding

THE

So Ian, can you tell me a bit about yourself? Well, in theory I am retired, I’m married and have three children and seven grandchildren. I used to be a nursery man so I like being outside – that’s with plants and not children. I like being outdoors. I would have never thought of taking a class but it happened because Irene, my wife, had open heart surgery nearly 10 years ago followed by cardiac rehabilitation. We enjoyed that circuit class. That came to an end and we had to look around for what else to do. We had a gym at our church, at South West Baptist Church so thought why don’t we do it there. How did it all come together? We wanted to do a circuit. We looked around for someone to take it, and then Sport Canterbury sponsored me to do a community coach course so now I’m a qualified community coach. We started the classes five and a half years ago on a Thursday. It gave somewhere so Irene could carry on and do some exercises. We were then asked if we would do another one and we got instructors Julie Gunby and Bernie Smith onboard. So now we have now & Surf 16x8 - The Ski Sale.pdf classes on Mondays and Thursdays. At the beginning of last year, Mon-

day morning got so big we couldn’t cope with the numbers so now we have two sessions on Mondays. We had been keen to start one in another church in Halswell, and now we have just started one on Tuesday mornings in Halswell with Carol Hides. And what sort of demographic are the classes aimed at? The classes are open to everyone, but because during the day, certain people are at home and able to come they can be senior people. We have younger ones as well, and it could be after operations or for rehabilitation. Usually those who come are between 50 and 80. And what do the classes consist of? They go for about an hour. We have a warm-up to music to begin with for up to 10min and then we go onto stations of the circuit. We’ve 1got 29/04/2014 a.m. 40 in the gym 10:15:38 at Spreydon and we have a card at each station saying

what to do and we will do this for about 20 minutes and then move onto the other stations. We finish by having a stretch and cool down for about five minutes. Then we go to the cafe for a cuppa and a biscuit, and that’s all included. It’s a very important part of it. They love the social action and reaction and they can be there for 45min. Why do you think it is that the classes have grown in popularity? People often bring their friends and neighbours and hear of it through word of mouth. We don’t do much advertising. You get some single men living in their flats and they invite their neighbours. We had two sister-in-laws for the first time recently. It means we’re often getting new people, but we’ve also got quite a number of people who have been coming for years. Have people found it effective? For them to be able to do it at their own pace they can do what they can do. Just about every week people say their balance has improved. Balance is important, and strength and flexibility and cardio workout. The whole thing is designed to be an opportunity for people to maintain or improve their level of fitness. Continued, p12

Be active and stay healthy From p11 Have you had any experience in fitness coaching before starting Keep Active! ? Well when we were first married we went to Australia and I did a Diploma in Youth Leadership and it actually included circuit training. I like being active I guess. I think the enjoyment adds to the pleasurable experience people have. They benefit socially and physically. A lot of people say they would not do it on their own. Do you ever get some time off from taking the classes? In the school holidays the South West Baptist Church building is used for holiday programmes so we don’t have the classes during that time. Many people say two weeks is too long to go without the classes. How many people attend each class? We get around 30-40 at each class, it got up to over 60 at one stage and that is when we decided to split the classes up. And due to popular demand, you have decided to expand to Halswell, can you tell me a bit about that? Yes, the other class will be at the other church hall at 6 Balcairn St in Halswell. What area of Christchurch do you and Irene live? We live in Hoon Hay but people come from all over the city for the classes. We have people come from Northwood, Burnside, the east and south of Christchurch and Halswell. We started with

CLASSES: Irene and Ian Oxley enjoy helping people maintain health. 12 people and we still have some coming now that came to that first class five and a half years ago. And what role does Irene have in the classes? She has not done training, but most sessions she will do 10 minutes of stretch bands, so working on the different movements. As the classes increase she has to do all sorts of things. She calls herself the tea lady. What is the most rewarding part of having started the classes and taking them? It would have to be seeing people improving and enjoying

what they are doing, but doing something that helps maintain their health. It’s energising for you. Have you always lived in Christchurch? Yes we have basically always lived here. We had two years in Australia, in Sydney, and I went to YMCA. We also did a few years on farms because I’m an outdoor person. We were in North Canterbury, I did some farming before I was married and worked at Springbank and Southbrook. I also worked at a farm out by the airport. Then I worked with the Wai Ora Trust and I specialised

in growing Canterbury native plants for re-vegetation. I enjoyed doing that, we used to take people out to the rivers to collect seed and cutting and came back and grew the plants. I also had time at Woodland Nursery. Irene did office work. What are some of your hobbies? Well Irene’s would be doing crosswords, jigsaw puzzles and crocheting. Mine would have to be composting and I like the garden. I have an allotment where I grow veges out in Papanui, so I enjoy that. My other hobby is Chinese cooking. Where do you both like to go on holiday? I wouldn’t have said I’ve got a favourite place, it’s just nice to get away, especially in winter it is nice to go somewhere warmer. We can usually go away at school holiday times and we’ve got all our family around here. We’re going away next month up to Auckland for Irene’s mother’s 100th birthday. And this weekend it’s my mother’s 100th birthday. Wow, that is impressive, does your mother attend your classes? My mother is at Anthony Wilding, and she doesn’t do standing up classes anymore, but I know she goes to exercises classes there. •KEEP ACTIVE! classes are held on Mondays at 9.30am and 11.30am, and Thursdays at 1pm at 244 Lyttelton St, Spreydon, and Tuesdays at 9.30am at 6 Balcairn St, Halswell. Entry is $3 per person for each class.

The pixie cut was a major hair trend last season, but this year sees the originally short style evolve in to a longer, softer version. The Asymmetric Pixie Kit contains Tecni.ART Fix Max and Tecni.ART Wild Stylers Depolish, offering a number of styling options. Wear the look tousled, piecey and mismatched, or it can be fashioned in to a sleek side-parting. ’Oréal Professionnel expands its iconic styling collection Tecni. ART with new Tecni.ART Fashion Look Kits. There are five kits altogether, each pairing two Tecni.ART products. When used together, the products help clients achieve one on trend look – the Messy Braid, Shaggy Lob, Bouncy Waves, XXL Volume or Asymmetric Pixie. There’s little that grounds a romantically effortless look like the simple, single braid.

Braids have been hugely popular on the recent Fall 2015 Fashion Week runways, and a good one is eternally chic. So it’s probably no surprise Tecni.ART launches a Messy Braid Kit. The kit contains Tecni.ART Fix Design and Tecni.ART Super Dust for a textured, voluminous and stylishly lived-in braid while leaving hair firmly secured in place. The Shaggy Lob is this season’s cooler, modern take on the ubiquitous lob haircut. The Shaggy Lob Kit, comprises Tecni.ART Wild Stylers Next Day Hair and Tecni.ART

Youth need guidance on

transition from school to jobs

T

housands of young people attending the Christchurch Careers Expo over the next few days will be looking to their future transition from school into the world of work. This is where the Careers Expo presents an unparalleled opportunity to connect directly with those most able to provide guidance and information needed to make informed choices for the journey ahead. There are skills shortages aplenty in New Zealand, for instance in building construction in Christchurch. The economy is booming, yet statistics show that a lot of young people are still not finding work, with unemployed aged between 15 and 24 at

unacceptably high levels. Director of the Careers Expo Mark Gillard, does not believe that these people aren’t interested in work; he believes the problem stems from the crucial transition between school and the workforce. Pointing to international research carried out by the UK’s Education and Employers Taskforce, Mr Gillard explains that there needs to be an increase in interaction between businesses and young people, when young adults are still at school. “Their research entitled It’s Who You Meet found that students from all demographics benefitted from early interaction and engagement with business, being considerably

less likely to end up without a job, outside of training or education.”

All new World of Work In a bid to more effectively bridge the gap between learning and work, we’ve developed a new interactive World of Work hub as part of the 2015 Careers Expo to bring job seekers and employers closer together. Each year, around 160,000 Kiwi secondary school students (years 10-13) make decisions about their careers and life after school, such as where and what to study and what they want to achieve in life. These are huge decisions for young people, and the more

information we can provide to help make the best choices at this time, the better. Being able to talk to someone ‘on the job’ or from an industry body can help clarify many of the questions that sit around the transition into the workforce: What is it really like to work in a particular sector? What are the costs of training? How long will it take? And, will there be a job for me at the end of my training? Our new World of Work hub takes a close up look at the top 10 things employers want from potential employees, how to create a CV, interview tips, long-term marketplace outlook and skills shortage information, and hands-on demonstrations from those in the workplace. Connecting with tertiary training organisations, industry groups and future employers is so important for young people to do. It is never too early to start thinking about their future and they should take advantage of opportunities to connect directly with future employers. Sometimes it’s not what you know, but who. And it’s true that first impressions count. The Careers Expo and the World of Work provide the ideal opportunity for young people and their families to scope out the wide range of opportunities that exist, and to talk through about future plans.

Take action for daily relief Beat stress by adopting simple calming and regenerating habits Stress: it makes your heart race, your head pound and your stomach churn. Although a little stress can be a good thing and help motivate us when needed, too much stress can lead to negative health effects including headaches, upset stomach, back pain, trouble sleeping and a weakened immune system. In fact, the American Institute of Stress reports that up to 90 per cent of visits to primary care doctors are due to stress-related health problems. “Stress can seem unavoidable. Work demands, family obligations and financial pressures all contribute to our stress levels,” says psychologist Dr Ruth Kenzelmann, “but there are steps you can take to derail stress as it’s happening, and prevent it from interfering with your health and quality of life.” Kenzelmann suggests some things you can do “in-themoment” when you’re feeling stressed:

Research supports eye health

N

utritional researchers have discovered a range of nutrients that are essential for eye health. Some of the most essential nutrients that have been shown to protect and even improve eye function are: Selenium, a trace mineral that is low in NZ soils and therefore in many of our foods. Researchers believe selenium may help prevent cataracts, macular degeneration (the leading cause of impaired vision in older people) and may also improve dry eyes and general eye health. Zinc is a mineral that a large percentage of the population are low in. Zinc has been shown to help protect the eyes from the damaging effects of light as well as slow vision loss due to macular degeneration. Vitamin C, citrus bioflavonoids, betacarotene (provitamin a) and copper have potent antioxidant ability and help protect the eyes from damage.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are amazing nutrients that have been shown in landmark research to not only provide potent eye protection, but may even help reverse some of the signs of agerelated macular degeneration (AMD). Bilberry and blackcurrant, high in potent antioxidants, may help protect the lens and retina from damage and reduce the risk of cataracts. They may also help improve blood supply to the eye, strengthen the small capillaries of the eye and may help improve night vision, may alleviate many eye ailments, including eye fatigue that may be caused by reading, driving and computers. Eyebright may help normalise eye pressure and reduce eye allergies. Taurine is an amino acid that is essential for correct eye function. It may also have a detoxifying effect on the eye. Vitamin B2 may help alleviate eye fatigue, bloodshot eyes and maintain good vision. Yumberry is the latest in eye protection. It provides many nutrients, is rich in oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) that are potent antioxidants that may protect eyesight. These nutrients, taken in a therapeutic amount, should provide comprehensive eye protection, may slow and possibly even help reverse eye damage that could lead to loss of vision. All these nutrients are available in an economical once a day, easy to swallow capsule. Further info is available in-store at Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton, or phone 388 5757.

Sleep troubles? A deep, relaxing sleep is essential for good health and so the body has time to repair, maintain and replenish itself.

F

or a good night’s sleep, it is important to have sufficient physical activity during the day. Deep breathing helps relieve stress, tension and worry, improving sleep and health. Try to spend some time in the fresh air and sunlight daily. Walking with bare feet on the grass helps to earth us with nature and can be quite effective, especially in the evening before bed to promote a good night’s sleep. Nutritional supplements can be highly effective in supporting a good sleep by providing nutrients needed for correct muscle and nerve function and supporting healthy levels of brain chemicals that are needed to put us into a deep sleep and for relaxation. GO Magnesium Sleep has been carefully formulated to support a deep, relaxed sleep. It contains a special blend of high

absorption magnesium and other natural minerals needed to relax muscles and ease nervous tension. It also contains tart cherry extract, a natural source of melatonin to support a good deep sleep as well as getting to sleep and staying asleep. As well, it contains a potent blend of passionflower, zizyphus and 5-HTP to relax the body, mind, nerves and support healthy levels of brain chemicals essential for a good deep sleep. Enviro Master

for heat pumps

I

f you are rebuilding or repairing your home, Enviro Master can offer you a complete solution to meet your individual heating, cooling and ventilation needs. Many housing companies offer a package deal and therefore may size or position your heat pump incorrectly. It is best to talk to the experts to tailor a solution to best suit your individual requirements. This can be done from your architectural plans or from a free in-home consultation. Enviro Master have been servicing the Christchurch area for over 12 years and supplies, installs and services all the leading brands, including Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi and Daikin. This means our team can show you which system and brand will best suit your needs. We currently have a stock clearance on 2.5kW cooling/3.6kW heating systems starting as low as $1900 installed. These are ideal for a bedroom or office, and there

are very limited numbers of these systems available. We also have savings up to $800 off the recommended retail price on selected models. Heat pumps are known to be one of the most energy-efficient forms of heating available. In addition to being able to provide up to 4.9kW of energy for every 1kW used, there are the added benefits of cooling, dehumidifying and air filtration (great for people with allergies or asthma), benefits no other heating appliance can offer. Ducted and multi systems are becoming increasingly popular in providing climatecontrolled comfort throughout your home or workplace. We are also able to incorporate ventilation into ducted systems. For a free in-home consultation, call Enviro Master on 366 0525 or visit our showroom at 41A Shakespeare Road, Waltham, Christchurch.

et’s face it – every manufacturer tells you their heat pump is the best, quietest, most energy-efficient and each has a multitude of constantly updating/changing models on offer. Plus, New Zealand homes tend to be very individual in size, shape and location, which greatly affects heating and performance requirements. There are three essential steps to ensure you get the right solution for your home: Get the right size - This requires accurate measurement of the volume of the air to be heated in your property and an understanding of heat loss and airflow characteristics. Get the right model - What was right for your neighbour might not be right for you; heat pumps are constantly changing and being improved. Get it installed correctly - Probably the most misunderstood element. If a heat pump is not installed correctly, it will not function at its rated output, may fail prematurely and void the warranty. The answer is to talk to a company that knows about all the brands and can give impartial expert advice. Heat Pump Guys are independent dealers. Unlike most companies that are tied in to one manufacturer, they are accredited for all major brands: Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Daikin, Hitachi, LG and so on. They have an obligation-free home appraisal service to advise customers which heat

pump is best for them. So if you are thinking about getting a heat pump this year make sure you make the right choice. Give their friendly staff a call on 0800 47 48 97 or visit www.heatpumpguys.co.nz.

ow, with the colder and wetter weather on its way, homeowners are focusing on ways to make their homes comfortable, warm and healthy for their families throughout winter. Rising damp affects many older properties which suffer from poor or no insulation. In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many have relocated to homes that suffer from rising damp which can be associated with health problems. Independent tests have shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise from the ground and enter a house every day, leading to mildew, mould, condensation and musty smells. Moulds can produce allergic reactions. Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a

locally owned and operated firm. The team understands the problems caused by rising damp. They will come to your damp home and pump a lightweight, flowable foam concrete under your timber-floored home. Adapted for New Zealand conditions and applications, it provides a layer of protection against rising moisture. An unexpected benefit that the team have noticed is that many owners of properties with underfloor foam concrete installed reported that it also provided protection against liquefaction after the earthquakes. Contact Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd for a free, no-obligation quote and complimentary appraisal of your underfloor ventilation needs at 03 376 4608 or 0508 362 626.

SMOOTH-AIR PRODUCTS

To ensure the quality of your air, contact the experts. Smooth-Air Products can calculate the required air exchange for your building requirement. Smooth-Air offers a wide range of ventilation equipment, from air vents to ducting for fans, for both the commercial and domestic markets. They have an extensive range of fans and ventilation components in-store but they can also provide innovative solutions tailored to differing requirements. Ventilation - This includes both the exchange of air to the outside as well as circulation of air within the building. It is one of the most important factors for maintaining acceptable indoor air quality in buildings. Filtered air supply for summer and filtered and warmed air in winter create a healthy

ve Remo ells ng sm i k o o c am! e t s d an

environment. In case of poor or insufficient air intake from outside, the oxygen content decreases, humidity and dustiness levels increase. If exhaust ventilation is not provided or not effective, polluted air, smells, humidity and harmful substances are not removed. Low oxygen with high carbon dioxide causes stuffiness. Harmful substances like dust and tobacco smoke can cause various diseases. Even bad smells can cause discomfort or irritate the nervous system. In summer, it’s easy to open windows for cross ventilation, but as winter approaches, we start to shut up out houses to trap in the heat and as a result, air quality can decline. It is therefore important to ensure good air quality indoors through adequate ventilation.

Priced sharply - smart buying in Fendalton 85 Totara St, Fendalton $975,000

6 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | 3 toilets | 2 living rooms | 2-car garage |Listing #: BE192296

M

y vendors have priced this spacious family home at just above RV - could this be the best buy in Fendalton? Packed full of original character features such as the original wood panelling and leadlight windows with the bonus of double glazing having been carefully done in sympathy with the charm of the home. Modern efficient heat pumps plus a log burner bring the home into our 21st century standard required for warmth and comfort. With two spacious living rooms and a large kitchen dining room, five good sized bedrooms and a study (which can be a sixth bedroom if needed), there is room to adapt this house to your lifestyle while retaining ample space to satisfy the family. The laundry off the back of the kitchen is particularly spacious - you can safely hide the laundry in here until needed. A third toilet is located off the laundry as well. The two bathrooms are equally of generous size and quality fitout, one downstairs for the master bedroom and the other upstairs for the family. The upstairs is ideal for a retreat area for the children or if you have extended family, this could be used as a private living space with its own bathroom, living room and three bedrooms. A balcony from the living room makes a charming spot to sit and enjoy the sun. The private rear courtyard will be a sheltered spot to enjoy the last of the summer before winter really sets in. Pleasantly

landscaped with a water feature and fish pond - there is also room for the greenfingered who may wish to have a vegetable garden as well. Usefully, there is a shed to securely store your garden implements out of sight. A large double garage will take a 4WD and there is off-street parking as well. With some thought there would be also the ability to create room to park a boat if desired. Zoned for the two of the most highly regarded state schools in Christchurch (Christchurch Girls’ and Christchurch Boys’ High), now would be the time to secure your children’s entry with applications starting for enrolment later this year. Call now – this is a well-priced home in a first class area. Open Home dates: Saturday, May 2; Sunday, May 3, 2.15pm to 2.45pm; and Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10, 2.15pm to 2.45pm. IT'S BEEN 40 YEARS IN THE WAITING… THE LEGENDARY COUNT BASIE ORCHESTRA HITS CHRISTCHURCH ON MONDAY 25TH MAY AT THE ISAAC THEATRE ROYAL AS TH PART OF THE 80 ANNIVERSARY TOUR

Directed by veteran trumpeter Scotty Barnhart, and featuring special guest vocalist Carmen Bradford, the big band 18-piece Count Basie Orchestra performs Billie Holiday to Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra to Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughan to Ella Fitzgerald. Current members include a solid core of musicians hired by Basie, including saxophonist John Williams and trombonist Clarence Banks, as well as former members of Stan Kenton's, Benny Goodman's and Lionel Hampton's ensembles. The tradition of excellence has continued beyond the Count's passing in 1984 to make the Orchestra a permanent fixture in Down Beat and Jazz Times polls and, at last count, the recipients of a total 18 Grammy Awards garnered as recently as their Count Plays Duke album of '99.

WIN TICKETS

Star Media has a double pass to the show to giveaway. To go in the ticket draw, write you name and daytime contact phone number on the back of an envelope, along with the answer to: ‘What year did Count Basie pass away?’, and send it to CBO Ticket Competition, PO Box 1467, Christchurch. Entries close 5pm Tuesday 19th May. The winner will be notified.
